Victoria Coren’s Poker book Now in Paperback!

As the daughter of Alan Coren, a renowned writer, humourist and satirist, it was always likely that Victoria Coren was going to have a few intelligent tricks up her sleeve. She has amply proven herself to be a class act, balancing the world of journalism and TV presenting as easily as her father but also in a way that marks her own personality and individuality on her appearances. Clever, calculating but with a notable sense of humour underpinning it all, Coren has found herself admired up and down the land as being a throwback to an era when television presenters behaved in “the correct manner.”

Coren has an extensive poker history

This tends to throw people when they realise that Coren is a big name on the poker circuit and has decades of experience in the game behind her, not to imply that she is of a certain vintage, she just started playing poker at an early age. Poker and online poker, even free poker games, are hugely popular these days and there are countless celebrities turning at every opportunity to get their name in print or face on TV.

Some of these players see poker as just another way of gaining publicity for themselves but others are genuine poker fans and would be playing the game if fame never came to their door. This is definitely the case with Coren who no doubt feels on occasions that her “proper” jobs get in the way of poker. This is something that most poker players will understand and realise and many tough decisions have to be made in separating poker life from normal life.

Her poker book now available in paperback

Of course, for many people there comes a time when the two become so intertwined that they cannot help influence each other and this is partly the setting of Victoria Coren’s book, ‘For Richer, For Poorer’. Although it should be classified as a poker book, it is not a book about poker. It is a book about how Coren fell in love with the game and how the game became part of her life, bringing joy, sadness and at times respite from the world around her. Die-hard poker fans will appreciate the run-down of winning hands and the insight into genuine poker characters but non-poker players will adore the emotion and honesty that shines forth from the pages.

There are many different ways to play poker but for non-poker players, the most common comments are that it is a game of chance or luck. There is an uncontrollable element in what cards a player receives from the deck but it is what the player does with these cards and how the player interacts with the other players that separate the winners and losers. It is easy to draw a parallel between poker and life in this regard because each person gets the opportunity to make things happen from situations. Life is clearly more important than a poker game but a good attitude in one can bring dividends in the other!
