The durrrr Challenge: Cates now up by more than a Million

Dwan and Cates sat down for yet another session of the durrrr Challenge last Friday, and the win was once again shifted to Dan “jungleman12” Cates. This recent victory of his gives him a lead of more than $1.2 million, and they’re not even halfway done with the challenge yet. Dwan is certainly taking a good beating, losing way too much in a challenge of his own making.

The most recent session

Sessions of the durrr challenge are few and far between, but Cates manages somehow to make each one count. They played a 780-hand session last Friday – not a massive session, but we’ve got to be thankful for small mercies. The last installment of the challenge was actually back in March 8, also ending to the benefit of Cates. The biggest pot was actually worth $127,000 – a result of an insane raising session between the two players. Dwan started it out with $1,200, to which Cates answered with $4,000. Dwan called, and the flop was revealed to be 5-6-7. Cates, holding 8-7, was emboldened and went on to bet $4,800. Dwan had 6-5 himself, so he raised to $12,500. Cates, confident of his win, shoved all in with $59,000 and Dwan called. The turn and river were run twice, with Cates winning the first with a better two pair.

The second board also went to Cates, the 9 completing his straight draw earlier. In the end, Dwan simply could not compete, despite winning the second largest pot of $117,000, and had to end the session with another massive loss. He was actually playing at an airplane and was experiencing a bit of turbulence so he had to end the session. When the next session will take place is anyone’s guess, but if the past records are anything to go by, it’s going to be another long wait before we see these two again.

The Stats so Far

With this 780-hand session, Dwan and Cates have now complete 18,236 of the required 50,000 hands. Cates is up by $1.2 million, which could be a huge, nearly impossible burden for Dwan to overcome. But who knows, Dwan has won bigger pots before, perhaps he could completely turn this around. Dwan does have a knack for getting pots worth more than $500,000 at a time. The problem is that, unlike Antonius, Cates isn’t too big on those insanely huge pots.
