Brent Carter Wins WSOP Circuit in Florida in a Rush to Get to the Bathroom
Imagine that you’re standing at the precipice of a huge victory – the heads up portion of a WSOP tournament – only to be assaulted by this great need to go to the johns, when the rules specifically state that bathroom breaks are not allowed. It’s the stuff of nightmares, isn’t it? Yet it’s exactly what Brent Carter needed to get that extra oomph that allowed him to zoom through the ranks and head straight into first place.
An Inopportune Time
Brent Carter, owner of two WSOP bracelets and 63 year old poker pro from Illinois, was faced with quite a predicament when he finally made it into the heads up portion of the $345 buy-in HORSE event at the Palm Beach Kennel Club. He already outlasted a field of 171 players, with only one more opponent to go before he went ahead to claim the first place prize of $13,454, when he felt the need to take a comfort break. Unfortunately for Carter, the tournament rules specifically stated that the clock would never be stopped outside of scheduled breaks. This meant that he either had to opt out of the tournament and satisfy his bladder’s urge or just hold it all in and brazen his way through heads up. Brent Carter, ever the soldier, opted for the latter despite the odds. He was actually on a 2 is to 1 disadvantage against Tuan Luu, putting him in a very precarious position.
Carter literally threw caution to the wind and played some of the most ambitious hands. He was on ultra aggressive mode on account of his need to use the johns, and it appeared as if it all that aggressiveness gave him enough impetus to overwhelm Luu. Carter managed to pass Luu’s lead and he went on to win the tournament. Immediately after the tournament, Carter made a beeline to the bathroom. He emerged a while later to celebrate his win, of course, $13,454 richer and with an entertaining anecdote to share with his friends.
Carter’s Career
Carter admitted after the tournament that, if he didn’t need to go to the restroom so bad, he would never have played the hands he did. But it must have been fate’s hand at work there as Carter ended up with yet another win to add to his resume. As of yet, Carter has had 46 cashes in the WSOP, and this most recent win of his has pushed him past the $3 million profit line in terms of live tournaments.
